Walter and Wallace Scott founded the Whispers group in 1964 in Watts, California. The Whispers members involved both the brother as well as Nicholas Caldwell, Gordy Harmon, as well as Marcus Hutson.
In 1966, after being invited to the San Francisco Bay Area, the band relocated itself and started developing their reputation as a live act. In 1969, after being discharged from the Vietnam War, Walter came back to the group.

In 1992, Marcus Hutson decided to leave the group because of prostate cancer. In 2000, he died, and the group vowed to never replace him. This is how the Whispers decided to perform as a quartet.
Later in 1993, Jerry McNeil left the group. However, in 2014, the group was inducted into the Official R&B Music Hall of Fame.
